This program will help you maintain healthy mouth and teeth and also, it keeps an eye on your oral health regularly.
Emergency Care
There will be circumstances when emergency dental problems arise and this automatically affects your activities of daily living. We recognize the feeling of urgency to have these certain problems resolved immediately. And having these in mind, we always ensure that we prioritize your emergency needs. May it be a broken tooth or a painful toothache, we can definitely assist you and render appropriate dental care. Here are some of our emergency care procedures for your guidance:
Root Canal Treatment/Pulpotomy
Definition:
Root canal is a dental procedure wherein a damaged or unhealthy nerve tissue, also known as the central core of a certain tooth, is taken out and then the nerve tissue chamber and root canals, which are the inside parts, are sealed and filled.
Purpose:
The discomfort and pain due to pulpitis (inflammation or infection of pulp) can oftentimes become unbearable. This is the most common cause of toothache and to relieve the patient from pain, discomfort and of course further complications, a root canal may be necessary.
Intervention:
This procedure is under a local anaesthetic. The dentist will create an opening on the tooth to get ahold of the dying nerve tissue. Once there is a grasp on the dying nerve, a portion of it is removed and a certain therapeutic agent is applied to basically calm the tooth. After that, a temporary filling will then be placed and the patient needs to go back to the clinic to have the Root canal treatment completed.
Symptoms:
Patients usually feel prolonged sensitivity to cold and hot temperatures, severe and unbearable pain when chewing and possibly darkening of the tooth. Oftentimes, patients also experience gum inflammation and tenderness with some pimples appearing on the area, too. If the patient is asymptomatic, the dentist may need to do an x-ray to assess the condition of the tooth and check for any signs of infection around the bone.
Broken Teeth
Definition:
A tooth can be broken or cracked for certain reasons, typically by trauma, biting on something hard and also teeth grinding. This can now be considered a tooth fracture.
Classifications:
Tooth fracture can be classified into:
- Craze lines
- Split teeth
- Fractured cusps
- Vertical tooth fractures
- Cracked teeth
The choice of treatment depends on the direction, size of the crack and the location of the fracture.
Intervention:
As an emergency case, the dentist can provide a temporary filling to seal the fractured area. Further assessment may be necessary later on to objectively decide what the best intervention for the broken area is.
Tooth Removal (Extractions)
Definition:
Extraction of a tooth
Description:
Though tooth removal is typically a non-emergency case, there are circumstances when a tooth is fractured beyond repair, decayed or infected due to gums problems and these cases now are the exemption to the rule. As it’s not usually advisable to have a tooth extraction while gums are inflamed, patients are prescribed with analgesics or antibiotics to temporarily control pain and discomfort prior to the actual extraction of the tooth. After the extraction, assessment of the area is very much necessary to identify the proper intervention that can be done to replace the missing tooth.
Tooth Replacement
Dental Implant
This is a surgical procedure which utilizes a small cylinder of titanium that is implanted into the bone. As a normal physiological process, the bone around the implant coalesces with the small cylinder of titanium and permanently affixes the implant. Once the implant is stable and secured, it can now be used to support a bridge, denture, or a crown usually depending on the treatment program for the specific area.
Bridge
This is a non-removable or fixed appliance which can replace a missing tooth or set of teeth. Practically, it has a number of advantages which includes a better ability to chew and of course it can also improve your smile. Basically, the bridge would require two teeth on either side of a certain missing tooth.
There are several types of bridges, like the “traditional bridge’, which is the most popular type. This is made of porcelain covering a metal substructure. If you want to have a bridge which is more natural looking, you can opt to have the porcelain bridge which is entirely made of porcelain-like material.
Partial Denture
Unlike the bridge, this is a removable appliance which is made to support and cover the empty space between teeth (area without teeth). To keep it in place, clasps or hooks are used to fasten the partial denture. Therapy for Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJDS)
When there is a dysfunction with the voluntary muscles of the head, neck, jaw, tissues that supports these muscles and the shoulder area, then a patient can be diagnosed to have a myofascial pain dysfunction. The two main causes of this condition are:
- Misalignment of the upper and lower jaw and teeth or the abnormal relationship of the three. Because of the misalignment, the muscles holding the lower jaw need to over compensate in order to maintain its unnatural position relative to the upper teeth. Thus, the supporting muscles become overused and eventually this leads to pain and discomfort.
- Stress also takes a vital role in this condition. Chronic stress can lead to tightened neck and jaw muscles which eventually cause tenderness, pain and discomfort.
Treatments:
- Bruxism Appliance/ Night guard – needs to be worn every night to relieve the symptoms of TMD.
- Dental Equilibration/Adjustment – this process involves the attempt to allow the upper and lower jaws to seat in a more ideal position.
